How long is the gap between backups (data protection tasks) with your current backup solution?

We run a backup every night (so, once every 24 hours).

We use snapshot technology, so have a backup copy made several times throughout the day.

In addition to a backup, we have storage-based replication.

We are using Continuous Data Protection to protect data whenever it changes.

How much flexibility do you have in defining your recovery point SLAs?

We have the same recovery point capability for all of our systems and applications.

We are able to define a limited number of recovery point SLAs (e.g. mission-critical systems which can recover to the last snapshot and all other systems to the time of the last backup).

We are able to define different recovery point SLAs on a system-by-system basis but use different solutions to achieve different RPOs in this way.

Our existing backup solution enables us to define different recovery point SLAs on a system-by-system basis.

Can your backup data be compromised by cyber attacks?

Our backup data currently does not have any special features designed to improve protection against cyber attacks.

Our backup data is stored off-site from primary systems, but do not have any other features to protect against cyber attacks.

We have an immutable backup repository that is kept off-site from our primary but no other “hardening” features.

We have hardened our backup by making it air-gapped, immutable and use single-use credentials.

Is it possible that your backup data could reintroduce ransomware/malware after a restore?

Yes, this could be possible as we do not currently check if a backup contains infected files.

Yes, this is possible, but we are able to build our own sandbox environment and run a test recovery environment.

Our backup solution has automated functionality to mitigate against the possibility of backups reintroducing malware to our live environment.

How enabled is your ability for rapid recovery (i.e. being able to recover in minutes)?

We have limited recovery options and think of recovery times in terms of hours or longer.

We have rapid recovery for some systems/applications but not for everything.

We have rapid recovery for everything, but we use multiple solutions to achieve it.

We have rapid, granular and flexible recovery for all of our systems and achieve it with a single backup and recovery solution.

How flexible is your recovery capability?

We need to have identical or near-identical systems/infrastructure in place before we can recover.

We are able to recover to slightly dissimilar environments, but we have limitations on the granularity of recovery.

We have good overall flexibility of recovery across different platforms as long as our underlying hypervisor (e.g. VMware) is consistent.

We have completely flexible recovery capability, even across different clouds and hypervisors.

How do you cater for long-term archiving of your data and backup?

We don’t have a defined backup archive strategy.

We use our backup software to retain backups for archive and use tape and disk for long-term retention.

Our backup solution has good data lifecycle management capability which automates long-term archive including the cloud.

Our backup solution includes full data lifecycle management ensuring strategic use of the cloud for enhanced archive capability.

Are you leveraging the cloud for long-term archive?

Currently we do not use the cloud to archive backups/data.

Our backup solution uses the cloud for long-term archive, but functionality (like auto-discovery or flexible recovery) and/or choices of public cloud is limited.

Our backup solution takes a cloud-native approach to the archive including aspects like a choice of public cloud, central repository for every aspect of backup operations, intelligent tiering for cost optimisation.
